screeching bird

Postby alibags11 » Thu Feb 10, 2011 12:25 pm

Maise is an amazon with attitude but my biggest problem is her screeching, people in the house are begining to get cross with her and have taken to shouting at her.

This is not the normal morning or evening call its just continual screeching. she screeches when we leave the room or the house, if people put their coats on to go dosen,t matter who it is.
We are a very busy household so we do have kids playing and she seems to want to be louder than them, so with kids playing and trying to have a conversation is impossible.

We really do not have another room to put her in so she is in with the family all the time, she is let out when we are home unless she decides to be moody and refuses to come out . People have suggested covering her up, so i tried that and it doesn,t work ,so if she is in the cage or out she screeches. Will i ever be able to have a conversation with visitors again. Any help would be appreciated.

The usual reason birds screech is for attention, and even "negative attention" is likely to be pleasing to a screaming bird. What I've read is that the most effective thing is to absolutely ignore them when they are screaming. Don't yell back, don't come over and look, don't respond in any way, don't even twitch a muscle. At the same time, try to teach her to do something that is less annoying to solicit attention like whistling or saying "Hello!". Neither of our birds has a screaming problem, but whenever I sense they are trying to get attention by calling in a harsh a voice (assuming I'm quite sure nothing is actually wrong) I try very hard not to even THINK about the bird until it has stopped. Then the next positive/acceptable noise they make, I am extra sure to react to with a visit or a chat. I also try to respond to any acceptable solicitation for attention when it occurs. YMMV.

What i do when my Blue headed pionus screeches because i leave the room or am not paying attention to him like he'd like me to, i ignore him just like entranced said. I wait until he stops and then i will start paying attention to him. Don't let anyone react to the screeching (I know its hard my brother hates it when he screeches) but if they don't get a reaction they'll find something else to get your attention.

Hope your Grey stops screeching soon! :gray:

Alot of it your OWA's environment, kids, lots of coming and going etc, birds in a flock with lots of action tend to be louder than birds in a more sedate environment . Don't escalate the noise level or reaction by fussing (yelling) at the bird , try to get the kids to be calm around the bird or remove him to a quiet setting, young birds also tend to be more excitable than older birds. Do you have a safe place to give him some outside time in the sunshine, maybe with a bath, preening after a bath is usually followed by a nap or quiet time.Maybe giving him some extra attention (petting, straches) when his being calm and quiet could help also.
