Try a positive/negative reinforcement approach based on systematic desensitization and treats:

Just keep practicing and hold less and less with each time. Eventually he'll learn to stay on his back without extra support.

I'm not sure how you've been training you GCC, but with mine we noticed that the breeders would grab them over their back and turn them over so they were laying in their hand in a sense, they'd then 'tickle' the birds tummy while checking toes, leg band, number, etc. We decided to continue with it this way, and our GCCs are happy to lay on their backs on a table now, but love to sleep in our hands on their backs.

With JJ, one of the ways I can get her on her back is to start "tickling" her under one wing while we're playing. Usually while we're on the bed, couch or some other soft surface. Most of the time she'll lift her wing and just roll on over like a dog. At first I'd just mess with her feet a little, whatever she would tolerate. Now she'll let me scratch her belly and all kinds of things.

Good luck!
