Target trained?

Postby Fallen_Parakeet » Mon Jun 06, 2011 7:22 pm

Okay, About 6 days ago I bought a bird from a store called Our Feathered Friends (Great store!). I taught him/her to step onto my finger and he allows me to take him/her out of the cage to play. I'm not sure if he's target trained or not.. what is it?
I do not own a clicker if that helps... :budgie:

I have begun target training my Pacific Parrotlet. Its pretty much a chopstick that you use in combination with a clicker...at least to start. My bird has associated the clicker sound with getting a treat and now associates touching the tip of the target (chopstick) with its beak as getting a treat as well. Others may correct me, but I believe target training is useful because it relys on something that is always consistent and comfortable with introducing new things in order to desensitize them.
