Cockatiel Training Treats - Ideas Needed

Postby Mum2rory » Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:08 pm

Hi All, I want to start clicker training Rory the tiel. My questions is to other tiel owners, What treat do you use as reward? At this point Rory doesnt seem to over-excited by any "treats" offered so I thought I would ask you for some input. (He didnt seem to be too excited with millet, it didnt get his little tail feathers mojoing. LOL)

Am in australia, so some of the brands that you guys talk about are not available here. Hope this question hasnt been asked too many times, I am new to forum and havent gone thro all the old posts.

Also, can I change the colour of the budgie and tiel (Harry is white, Billy is Blue, Rory is Cinnamon white face
Thanks, Lynne :budgie: :budgie: :greycockatiel:

Well whatever your bird likes is best, get a few things that are not too expensive: Millet (all small birds and some big birds LOVE it), Favourite fruits (if your parrot prefers fruit better than Millet than use this (i use tiny apple cubes because my cockatiel prefers it to millet) u can also use pear, banana etc.

Hope this helps!

I had a cokateil and her most favorite food was BAR http://malezivali.com/trgovina/slo/76/s ... _20dag.jpg

I would also suggent that he is hungry. I realised that if he isnt hungry that he is not motivaterd. Just before you start your training remove all the food from the cage one day before you start.

Hope it helped :D

mum2rory, do you have your tiel on a pellet diet rather than a seed one? If so, you can then use seeds as his training reward. That's what I do w/Aaron. & his "jackpot" reward, like if he does something super great, is a sunflower seed.

My tiel is on a a mixed seed / pellet diet (mainly seed) but am slowly introducing fruit and vegs, which he doesnt really like - YET, but I am sure he will come round. I am hoping that his treat will be either fruit or veg based, just have to find it. Lynne

weeellll, maybe you'll have better luck than I did w/that. I'd love for Aaron's treat to be more healthy, but he's like a little kid about veggies or fruit (imagine a tiny tiel voice saying "I HATE broccoli!").

Hi Jenny, i know what you mean. I bought cockatiel seed for him and added cockatiel pellets to it. Everyday (nearly) I try and tempt him with fruit or veg and so far he is worse than 8yo son. He will pick it up in his beak and basically toss it, I will just keep trying. I have read that seed/pellets is not too bad for budgies and cockatiels, but I would like him to have a bit more variety. He does not like millet spray, have tried so many times I have lost count (yet my budgies love it). So still working on that fave treat for training.
