How long is your bird out of it's cage?

Postby Marguerite » Mon Jun 20, 2011 7:56 pm

Just wondering, how long are your birds normally out of the cage? Do you have a set schedule when they come out? When is that?

When I get up in the morning, Scooter comes out for a short good-morning preen n chat session. Then I do some morning chores and get him out again to "help me make his breakfast". If I have enough time, I'll have him out on his cage top or with me for a half hour or hour while I'm drinking coffee -- on weekends this is a much longer time period. I do the same again when I get home. He may be in and out a bunch in the evening depending on what's going on. Total of 30mins to 3 or 4 hours.

My birds come out first thing when I uncover them in the morning to take their morning poop and fly around some. Then I recall them back and put them in their cages to eat and drink. In the summer months, I put them in an outdoor aviary throughout the day and bring them back in in the evening. I also take them outside wearing their harnesses for 30-60 minutes several times a week. Then I let them take a break in their cages and have them out for another 30-90 minutes in the evening before putting them away for bed. This time will vary between training, flying around doing their own thing, cuddling, and playing with toys. On occasion I'll take them places so that breaks the schedule but for the most part it's fairly routine. They get used to a routine and prefer to follow it.

Thanks for the feedback guys! My senegal has been getting very nasty lately and I think it is because she doesn't have a regular in and out of the cage routine. Since now it is summer and I am working at home, I normally have her out all day, but I think this has made her feel she is queen of the house and doesn't have to listen to anyone! I think that I'll keep her on an out for morning hellos, and out for evening training sessions schedule, after all when I start going out to work or school later in the year it will make it easier for her, as long as she always has something new to play with in her cage.

I don't always have a set schedule is that really important? I try to have P.J. out of his case whenever possible. On the weekends he is only in his cage to sleep at night or when I am gone, or if he goes in there to nap. I take him to work with me a couple times a week and so he is out of his cage all day (he plays and naps on a boing, and playgym at my office). On days when I don't take him to work he is out for about 30 minutes in the morning and another 2-2.5 hours at night. I hope that is enough time.

I try to have them out a minimum of 5 hours a day. They have quite a few little "play stations", so they always have something to do.

I take them when I get home from work at 4, and they usually will hang out with me until bedtime.

Our :cockatoo: Lulu gets uncovered when we get up and we wheel her cage outside sometimes (when the missus is home)we open it up and she hangs out there for a couple of hours. In the afternoon she comes in usually around 4.30pm and just wanders around doing her own thing. Our Avian vet told us this is not good.he says take her out for around and hour per day for playtime. But she is a member of the family and the missus won't hear of that so she is quite undisciplined.

Our :greycockatiel: Dodo is strictly a cage only bird.We rescued her from a pet shop most of her feathers were gone and was very scared so is very unsociable but she is very quiet and will not talk.
We got her about 3 years ago.

Now :rainbow: Bubba.I was taking it out for around 2 hours per night for its play time until the other day when it attacked me now it don't come out.

are you working w/Bubba at all, or is he now permanently imprisoned because of the aggression episode?

My little rascals Eve and Lilith (my lovies) are new to the world of flying and playing so they are well, out quite often. They need to be socialized so I let them out about 3-5 hours a day.

Yoshi (my Green Cheeked), is out more often than not. She knows the rules of the house and she seemingly tries to teach the lovies how to behave. She's out about 4-9 hours a day. Depending on the day of course, some of us have to work. But normally, she's out more often than not.
