Reward food

Postby moaely » Fri Jun 24, 2011 5:03 am

Hello,

first of all i would like to say that Killi was the main reason why i decidet to get a senegal parrot. My parrot is called Kiwi and in about 6 months - 9 months old.

I decidet it was time to start training him, but i have a very basic problem. I don't know what food he would like best, i triend dry fruit, normal fruit, sun seeds, bar, itd. but no resoult.

Pleas give me advice what to reward feed him, majby what do you use.

Sorry for the bad grammer :) and thnx for all the info.

PS If you have any bacis tipps on training from experiance i would be very grateful.

Well it could well be that Kiwi hasn't been introduced to enough foods to know what his favorite is himself. I hope he's on a pellet diet. Buy a classic parrot seed mix and put a couple of each kind of seed in a bowl and let him try it for a few days. You can also use dried fruit, fresh fruit, nuts, and simple people foods. Let him try everything for now and see which ones he eats first in a week. By then he'll have some favorites established. Then you will be able to prioritize treats from most to least favorite. That means use the less favorite treats toward the beginning of a training session and save the most favorite ones for very good efforts or toward the end. If you use the best treats first, the rest will hold less value.

Senegal Parrots tend to like Sunflower seeds, saflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, apples, and bananas but it will really depend on what your specific one is exposed to and prefers.

Ignore it, don't let it change anything, use positive reinforcement approach.

I keep saying this over and over again. The best way to *fix* biting behaviour is to AVOID getting bitten in the first place. Learn to read his body language, learn when he'll attack.

If he attacks fingers, DON'T give him fingers.

Hi I just wanted to say that i had a hude breakthrew whith kiwi.

We established that his favorite food in sun flower seeds and we also managed to bild
a very good bridge between the clicker and food. As soon as I start clicking he changes
his bodylanguage as like he is expecting something to happen.

it took me about 5 days to buld that brigde but today we started targent training and he
seems to undedstand shat i want from him, clicker and reward.

We aslo got so far that he flyes all over the apartment following the targent.

So i would like to thnx you for the advice and all the videos on youtube. If we progress
as we have so far than maybe in a couple of weeks i will add my on video :D

Best regards from alex from Slovenia (Europe, not slovakia, but the small country near italy and austria)
