Do I clip their wings?

Postby Valerie » Fri Jun 24, 2011 1:11 pm

Hello there. I´m completely new to bird training and have now aquired a pair of young Forpus coelestis. They have been hand reared and although the male is a bit stand offish with me,the female is quite ready to engage BUT-----she likes to bite! I am going to try and follow the advice on your training pages and have a clicker and have started to click and treat with her. My question though is do I clip their wings? Also, another question,is it asking too much to have both birds together in the same cage,in the house and expect them to train or is it asking too much and they should be separate? I let my birds live together and I do not clip their wings. Different people have different ways of doing things though. I know a lot of people don't like to house birds together because they don't want the birds to bond to each other instead of to them. I don't mind this at all, I want them to bond to each other so they can have companionship. I think it is better for them.

Most people on this forum are strongly pro flight. I'm not, but I think the decision to clip or not clip should be based on your specific situation and your specific birds. IMO safety is the most compelling reason for clipping with ability of the bird to be out and about more becoming a close corollary. What clipping accomplishes is limiting how far they can range from a given location in a short period of time, basically. It doesn't really change anything fundamentally about training or taking care of them, and I disbelieve the notion that it somehow makes them more "humble". Ours are (mostly) clipped FWIW.

I do not clip my birds and never have. I recently adopted a bird who had been clipped and I can't wait for his flight feathers to grow back. They can get in much more trouble when flighted but can also get out of trouble. Plus, if I wanted a bird that couldn't fly I would get a penguin!
