Training 1 year old budgie

Postby Ashwin1224 » Thu Jul 07, 2011 12:09 am

Hi all,

This is my very first post in the forum.I am from india, and own 3 budgies and 4 zebra finch. I got the budgies from a relative, and didnt knew ,at all, that parakeets can be tamed and they talk,my SO never mentioned anything about this. But recently I got very attracted to the Sun Conure and I will Prolly get one pretty soon.
EDIT: call it my negligence or my lack of resources, I didnt knew that parakeets should get out of cage time as well, when i got them :( .Also, they are completly flighted.
From what i have read, conures are nt great talkers. But Just following youtube videos,I saw parakeets talking amazingly. So i am planning to tame 1 of my parakeets to talk along with taming the conure(I will be getting a 3 month old conure, whos still green and untamed).

Is it possible?
I will have to separate the budgie from the others right? or can i teach all three together?

I have some experience in training dogs and even a few fishes, so patience wont be a problem.
As an added feather to my patience cap,i was running a P3 machine till last year when i shifted to a mac

It's best to keep all the birds separate at first. It's best to be patient with the birds and don't try to push them too much. Try not to buy a cd which keeps repeating the same word over and over as the birds will lose interest in the word and won't want to speak it, just imagine someone playing you a cd which kept repeating a word in a foreign language it would annoy you and you wouldn't want to say the word! Parrots are just like humans in many ways, so try to only push the birds as hard as you would want to be pushed!

@cornettocockatiel
Thanks for the reply man.
I bought my Sun Conure Today,The Shop guy told me its best to get his winged clipped, even though he is completely captive bred.He said as this is my first big bird, it ll be better clipped. Its a 3 month old male, whose still olive green.
I am planning to start the training in the next week.4-5 days should be ok to get it aclimatized right?
Or should I Let him rest for a complete week?

And the budgies are already eating from my hand in a week. Is this progress good and should I continue or give them a few days off?
I just put my hand in the cage and sit there with food for about half an hour and then they come to eat.
I will separate the budgie i want to train in the comming week.

Regards
:)

The shopkeeper is probably right in saying that the bird should be clipped as at first the bird may be a bit scared of you and might start panicking and flying around and accidently hit a wall or window.
It's best that you should wait and let the bird settle in for a few days.
I think that you should carry on hand feeding the budgies and when you think their ready give them a day or two off and after see if they still eat from your hand. If they don't then you might have to retrain them and try again.

Good Luck!

Congrats on getting another bird!

But did the shopkeeper tell you or did you look it up, that Sun Conures, well most Conures, can be extremely loud?

Yea Man, i know. Conures are pretty loud. But i got absolutely no problem with sound , I am a metal guitarist

And its been almost two months since i have him. And the progress for my "wild" bird is that he is not afraid abit from me and readily comes to me and lets me touch him.Which was almost impossible to do just a week back
