My Parrotlet is affraid of me about 80% of the time

Postby LydiaDee » Mon Jul 11, 2011 5:07 pm

Hi, Im a first time bird owner, I have a Pacific Blue Parrotlet named Zelda. I have checked out a few of the 'how to' training videos here and have been trying to use them with Zelda. My problem however, is that she runs away from me almost all the time if she has a way to escape. She is about 3-4 months old and i have have her about 5 weeks now. Everything seems to be very hit or miss with her, i can sometimes pet her head and she loves it, but she refuses to let me touch any other part of her all the time and will run or cower on her perch or my hand. Her wings were clipped when I got her, by the breeder and she does seem to get by with them that way, but I have been considering letting them grow back and stay that way. She never bites me except when i try to flip her over and even then its usually just her trying to self right herself. All that being said, sometimes she isnt really scared of me, and will always sit on my shoulder, but its very little of the time she isnt dodgy around me.

Any suggestions on things i might change or if its just a matter of time and a bit of training

Thanks much

Lydia

It is a matter of time. Just take her out and hold her on your finger everyday for a long time and you'll see some results.

I also have a parrotlet that is scared to death of me. I have had him about 9 months and I am just beginning to see an improvement. At first he hid in my hair all the time or jumped off of my finger. I took to carrying him around in the cup of my hand which works well. I think he feels more secure. I think few things happen quickly with parrots but my little guy is taking forever. I sympathize with you!
