Monkey See Monkey Do in Parrots?

Postby PapayaTheConure » Mon Jul 11, 2011 5:08 pm

Out of curiosity, I wanted to know if an owner can show one parrot a behavior and another parrot sees, will the other parrot mimic the behavior or catch on in some way?

Irene Pepperberg, who trained the famous parrot Alex, uses what is called Model/Rival training with her birds. It's basically using other birds and humans to both demonstrate the behavior and to compete for the praise of the trainer.

They can also imitate each other. Squeaky was conservative about trying new foods until Iggy came along. She is a pig and once he saw her eating everything he started doing it too!

Rambo wouldn't touch a banana or egg before Myrtle came. Now he want his share. She didin't eat veggie until she watched him. He wouldn't eat Routy Bush until he saw her. Sometimes we take a bite of something before offering it.

Even though he isn't copying another parrot, Skittles ( :sun: ) will often eat when he sees everyone else eating.
