rescue Timneh and cage aggression

Postby chris key » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:57 pm

I have just adopted a 6 year old TAG. His former owner was a male. We have had him 2 1/2 weeks. He is somewhat cage aggressive. He will come out of the cage for my my husband. my husband can even reach in and get him. At first I used a perch to get him to step up for me. With a bit of a struggle this worked. Now he has refused to step up on the perch at all. Once out of the cage he will step up fine for me and ok for my husband. I am thinking he just needs more time to get used to a female owner. He will kiss me through the bars of his cage. My question is what do I do if this continues? I am the main caregiver and have to be able to get him out. I tried luring him with a treat but he hunkers down in the far corner and it is difficult to get to him. He will strike my hand is I try to get him out. Help! :gray:

Maybee try getting him treats trough the bars of the cage.
Then when he accepts that without problems, try again inside the cage.
Offer the treat and pull back, so don't fource him to step on your hand right away.
Only start with trying that after he doesn't duck anymore when you come inside the cage with your hand and than try letting him step up to get the treat

If he strikes your hand then he seems a good candidate for target training. He'll strike the stick, and you can give him a treat. If he won't accept the treat out of your hand, you can leave it in his cage. Eventually he'll realize that striking the stick means food, and then you can make him work for it, by coming out of his cage and then eventually onto your hand.
