Amazon dominance?

Postby macaw mom » Thu Jul 14, 2011 8:07 am

I have a Amazon that has attitude. Anyway, she keeps flying from her perch to the top of my Macaw's cage. So far the Macaw doesn't seem to mind, but someone told me it was her way of being dominant over the Macaw. I also don't want her to get hurt should Sebastian decide he is tired of her sitting on top of his cage. I can't seem to get her to stop this behavior. We clipped her wings in an attempt to keep her grounded, but it does not stop her. I don't want to keep her confined to her cage as she prefers to be on her perch. Does anyone have any suggestions ?

I don't think this implies dominance one bit. My birds like to fly over on top of each other's cages as well. Of course they get defensive of their areas but they just like to hang out on high places like that. The biggest danger of the Amazon on top of the Macaw's cage is if the Macaw is inside and bites at the Amazon's feet or if the Macaw gets defensive of the cage and attack the Amazon. If both birds are out and they are not fighting over this, it's no big deal at all.

Put a piece of plywood or cardboard on top of the cage. Then put things on top that she would not want to land on. She will find another place to land and in the mean time the Macaw will not see her feet above him.

The higher they are the more attitude they have.

Thanks for your input. I am concerned that she will get hurt if Sebastian decides to become territorial---so far---he just goes on about his business. posting.php?mode=reply&f=11&t=5932&sid=01551397c158d6e38d761a3171d8f945#
