How do I tame my budgie in under an hour

Postby kiwitheparakeet » Mon Jul 25, 2011 1:34 pm

My one year old budgie is very kind and sweet. I want to take him out of the cage, but I don't want him to fly off, any ideas on how to tame him? Also he won't accept food from me. He'll eat when I'm in his presence, but wont eat millet through the bars of the cage or my hand. He wont step up unless he gets a treat for it. What do I do? Please help!

Forget once and for all about taming it in under an hour or any exact amount of time.

As long as he is in the house he can't fly away. Let him out - let him fly until he gets tired. He will let you pick him up then or maybe even step up.

He won't be tame but you can have physical contact with him. Don't hold him very long but take him back to the cage. If you have time to watch him leave the cage door open to see if he will come out again.

remove food from his cage for 3 hours or more to make him hungery . that way he will accept food from your hand . when he does i recommend clicker conditioning then target training . as Michael always say " target training develop trust between you and your bird " . my budgie is store bought and not hand feed and not tamed at all . and would never never step up he was very scared from me ( at least yours stepped up for treat ) mine wont , so i started with clicker conditioning then target training . then i taught him to nod his head .then to wave . i taught him this 3 tricks without any physical contact with him all 3 was taught to him inside of his cage . using food managment ( in other words making him a little hungry before training and removing food from his cage so that the treat on my hand is the only food ) target training will allow you to target him to your hand also with time he will trust your hand and get used to eat from your hand

but not in under an hour , training session should be short and multiple times a day , my budgie training session where 3 times a day 15 minutes each(sometimes 10 minutes ) so 30 minutes divided on your day for training your budgie is a very good time .and he will get the target trick very fast . you will be surprised how smart budgies are, just be patient :budgie: . finally make sure you read this article

Good Luck  tell me how your progress is
