Conure taming

Hi all!

Meet mojo!
Image

Hez a 3 and a half month old Sun Conure. :sun:
Ive had him for about 2 weeks now.Hez completely Untamed, he was not even Hand fed when i got him.He is my first parrot. Ive got A few Zebra Finches and Budgies too.
I have been spending a minimum of one hour everyday with him.During this time he cam out of his cage multiple times.Though i had to scare him wid a book to get him back in. Apart from that, he feeds from my hand always.Ive been using my tongue to produce the clicker noise, to which he has started responding. He even responds to the stick for target training. But he is still afraid of me maybe, he dosnt let me touch him, or even get my hand close to him if theres no treat.
Heres a video of him having a pear from my hand. How is my progress with him considering hes completely "wild" of sorts.(He is not wild though,we dont get Suns in India ;) )

Budgies are parrots, so he isn't your 'first' parrot. :)

Read Michael's taming guide in the taming section.

I know budgies are parrots, i meant to say first "Big" parrot.Budgies arent kept as companions, rather usually here in India, people keep small flocks of 6-8 birds.Which arent trained at all.As good as wild birds.

I have read the guide. And i am going according to it.I got this video coz I needed to know how is my progress. There is no-one i could ask in person, so ive posted it here.

Hello,

I have a site on parrot taming and training which I think will help you to tame your conure. I have an article on this subject which you can view on the following link:

http://www.trainingyourparrot.yolasite. ... our-parrot

Yes, your conure is progressing a lot for a parrot which isn't hand tame and wasn't hand fed. I have helped tame 3 cockatiels which were not hand fed or hand tame! If you have any further questions regarding this subject feel free to pm me. I hope this article helps and good luck taming your conure!

They seem too small for him.

Yes, your conure will probably eat millet.

Another good way to get him on your hand would be to target train him. You will need a clicker (preferably), a treat(maybe millet, anything he likes), and a target stick (unused chopstick). What you do is present the target stick to the bird, he will bite it out of curiosity, when he bites it click and give him a treat. Keep on doing this and when he has got the hang of simply biting the stick when you present it to him, start by holding the stick a little further away from him than normal. He should walk over to it and then bite it. Once he can walk over a little further to bite the stick, slowly put your hand out and put the target stick above your hand. He should walk on to your hand and bite the stick to get the treat. Keep on doing this and eventually, since he has walked on to your hand so many times to bite the stick, he will not be scared of your hand and will probably step up!

Good luck!

i am already target training him from the past two days.
He does walk over in his cage to bite the stick. But goes crazy if my hand stays there after hez taken the food, or if i put my other hand in.How long should i continue to just target train him, without calling him on my hand?

Try doing this for 1 - 2 weeks, until he has absoultely perfected it. Also, try doing it outside the cage. Let him know that your hand means treats and happiness. After 2 weeks let him out and feed him something from your hand, then start trying to target him onto your hand. It will be helpful to determine his favourite treat so you can use it in training, put 3 or 4 different foods that you think he will like on a plate and watch him eat. You can use the one that he eats first as a treat when training him as it will be the one which will motivate him the most.

Let me know about your progress with mojo and feel free to ask any questions if you need to,

good luck!

Let him out. Let him fly and get tired. He will willingly step up to get help.

This is not a taiming method but if you want touch it works.
