how to get her to let me pet/hold her?

Postby hopestar » Tue Aug 02, 2011 5:04 pm

i have been working on re-gaining my budgie's trust for a couple of weeks and so far she will eat out of my hand, bite less, fly away less, will step up, and if she lands on the floor, she will run to my hand and jump up on it and chirp happily, and i give her lots of millet. i want to get to the point to where i can pet her and hold her. but she gets nervous or bites and squawks when i try to pet or hold her. what should i do to achieve this?

You just have to keep at it. There is no secret technique or different training to be able to touch your bird. All this comes when the trust-bond thing is enough for the bird to accept petting :budgie:

Well it sounds like you are making good progress. Let me warn you that your budgie may never like/want to be held or pet. But you certainly can work on it and try. Just keep doing what you've been doing to gain its trust. Eventually you can start to hold your hand nearby and reward as you progressively are able to get closer and closer. Here are some related articles that can help:

Read the toweling one and work on the same concept but for just your hand and without the towel. Eventually you should get the bird used to being toweled as well. Good luck.
