Green Cheek "nibbling" too hard

Postby GreenCheekNoob » Sat Sep 10, 2011 3:55 pm

Hello! My husband and I purchased a 5 month old Green Cheek Conure several days ago. She LOVES to cuddle and seems to be warming up nicely to us. She loves to nibble on our fingers, ears, arms - anything she can get her beak on. She has recently started to get a little harder with it, though, even drawing blood to my parents. She seemed instantly drawn to my dad, and she would bob up and down excitedly and will jump on him as make cute little chirps as soon as she's near him. Unfortunately, she bites him the hardest. She walks up and down his arms, biting everywhere she can, all the way up to his neck. She bit my mom's arm the same way, and bit my collarbone twice. She doesn't appear to be doing this out of aggression. I'm not sure how to make her stop this behavior? I've read and heard so many different things, and I'm really not sure what to do to make her stop! She'll latch on to my shirt, biting my neck, and it becomes absolutely impossible to get her off of me. I basically have to sit there and deal with her nipping at me when she feels like it! Any advice would be helpful!

I say OWWW in a loud voice even if it doesnt hurt just to let him know he needs to be more gentle. I also read somewhere where you are supposed to give them a hurt look and immediately stop the play for awhile. Mine will play like the dickens now chomping on me very lightly and squeeling with delight when we wrestle. He never ever hurts me, but it sure sounds and looks like he is trying to when we are playing. He's so cute.

I have a Green Cheek and he is also "nippy". From what I understand this one of thier personality traits. I simply try to ignore it when he bites. You will become more and more numb to the pain and can possibly ignore it. I have noticed that through ignoring the bites and performing more tameness training mine has reduced his nibbles. We have had him 1.5 years and he still does it to me once or twice a day. I have never hollered at him, as I always read this is bad. I have called his name and said "no!" in a stern voice and all he is does is look at me as if to say "what did I do?" I really think it is some wierd way of them showwing affection/looking for attention. All I can tell you is that for me, time, perserverence and love have helped, but not fixed his nibbles (sometimes, straight up BITES). I wish you the best of luck and am sorry I could not provide more info. BTW the worst ones are when I look for a kiss.... and he decides to eat my lip, that has almost gotten him plucked in his little head, as he has drawn blood on my upper lip several times, but thankfully I held my temper and just ignored him.
