Davanced target trainign question?

Postby dohcsvt » Wed Sep 21, 2011 5:38 pm

My two birds are coming along well with thier training. They know target, turnaround and wave. I have begun to attempt to target from perch to perch. This works well until the perches are far enough apart that the birds have to fly. My :sun: will stop once he can't reach the other perch with his beak (and he will stretch like hell to make it) and my :gcc: will hop from perch to perch, but once wings are needed he is also done. I have tried everything I can think of. Close the distance and spread back apart. Spread apart at rates as short as a quarter of an inch and even just trying to wait it out for several minutes, but all to no avail. Does anybody have any idea on what I can do to help my little guys? Thanks in advance.

It's mostly a matter of luck now. Just keep trying and eventually they'll have to use their wings inadvertently and then they'll figure it out. Try keeping it at max distance they are willing to do and target many times in a row and then subtly spread it a tiny bit more. The inertia of previous ones may lead it to try the longer distance and not realizing it not be able to make it. Then instinct will kick in and it will flap its way across. After that it's easier because they know what they need to do.

Anyway, thanks for the input, hopefully these guys will catch on. I am hoping for one to catch on and then I will just put the other one in the vicinity to watch.
