Young bird I just purchased is very nippy

Postby WVUSAE » Wed Sep 21, 2011 5:53 pm

I purchased Mr. Crackers at a store. He is approximately 2 years old. Initially he was very quiet but he screams when i leave the room and will take treats from my hands. However if I put my hand in the cage he flees and avoids me. He nips if i go near him but occasionally he will let me pet him then attempt to bite me. I have tried target technique he will bite the stick, sometimes move to bite it and I click and give him his favorite treat (raisin bran) but he doesn't seem to understand even though I still work with him a lot. I am debating taking him out of his cage as he is pretty territorial is that a bad idea? I have to clip his wings also any suggestions? Will he be angry ? Any help appreciated.

He will not be angry that you clipped his wings. There intelligence level is not at a point that he will reallize what hapened. Also, what breed of parrot is Mr. Crackers? As for the screaming when you leave the room, as far as I know that means he wants you to come interact with him because he is lonely and misses his flock. These guys are very social and need LOTS of attention.

If he runs from you or nips when you get close that means he is scared and insecure. If you trim his feathers it will aggrivate the situation.

More often than not when you let them come out on their own and let them get tired of flying around they will step up to be put back.

Mr. Crackers is a cockatiel. He lived in a cage with what I believe to be a female cockatiel for as long as I know. He screeches but when I approach him the closest thing I can get is to give him a treat. Should I take him out and let him fly around or clip his wings? I have to towel him out if I were to take him out? Any suggestions are welcome.

Okay. He has been moved to a new home without his buddy. He feels volnurable. Entice him out of hids cage with goodies right in front of the door. Don't reach in a grab him. Don't use a towel. Give him a chance to adjust to the whirlwind of changes.

Thank you I will try this. What is a reasonable time for him to adjust (I know all birds are different I've had him about 2 weeks)? I just don't want him to sit in a cage for the next 15 years, I'd like to bond and have him out of the cage. Any other suggestions from anyone? Should I clip his wings?

No - it will only make him more insecure.
