treats for training

Postby animal_lover » Thu Sep 22, 2011 6:20 pm

Hey everyone. I am trying to train my parrot and am wondering what everyone uses as their treat? He likes peanuts but it takes him a couple of minutes to finish it. I see various people on training videos and they seem to use something tiny that the bird could eat very quickly (which I would like). Any ideas? Thanks in advance :meyers:

I use peanuts sometimes for my cockatiel, but because it takes him a long while to eat it, like you mentioned, i break it up into smaller pieces. If you are looking for a different treat, you cant go wrong with millet. It can be bought in most pet stores in the bird section. It is like candy for birds and they love it. Some other treats i use are almonds, apple (cut up in to tiny pieces so my cockatiel can eat the piece whole), almond (also cut into tiny pieces) and a lot of other stuff like fruit. It really just depends on your birds favourite. To find your birds favurite, put some options on a plate and use whichever one your bird goes to eat first.

I use Sunflower Seeds and Safflower Seeds for training; both my GCC and my UnCape love them. The Sunflower Seeds work well for my UnCape, it takes him much longer to get-at and finish the tiny-kernel of a Safflower Seed. Safflower Seeds work best for my GCC since it's quickly consumed and he doesn't fill up too fast. I also worry about giving my GCC too many sunflower seeds due to their fat content. :gcc: :cape: :)

I use hulled sunflower seeds split into 3 pieces for my GCC. I find that feeding the whole seed is too big/takes too much time to consume for him.

My Sun Conure doesn't seem to be that into food yet, but we'll see. The only thing she seems to enjoy is safflower seeds, but not even that much.

I use millet and safflower with my parakeet. With my grey I use small pieces of peanuts, sunflower seeds and oddly enough a dab of milk. My grey goes crazy for milk so he just gets a tiny sip from a spoon for a correct behaviour
