What to do with my other bird?

Postby seabird52 » Sun Oct 30, 2011 3:18 pm

Okay, so I have a :budgie: at home and it goes on my fingers and let me pet it and everything and it was great! But then I realized it was a bit 'sad'...like, it's not curious, it's not active, it's just... sitting there. So, I asked about it and turned out it was having depression because it needed a birdy friend; that's when I brought home a young, yellow, active, baby keet from a store. I gave it a few days to get used to its new environment and afterwards, I decided it was time to see if my old one was healthy. Turned out, it got untamed. Well, not all the way, at least more unafraid than the new one. So, I decided to re-tame it and here was my progress and how I'm doing:
1st day : When I approach its cage, the green and yellow keet turns their back and jumps onto the bars, running from my hand. So, I decided to leave and return and leave and return repeatedly until it stopped jumping away. :budgie:
2nd day : I sat cross legged in front of its cage and all the green one did was turn its back (not quite jumping yet, but getting ready) so, I SLOWLY (VERRRYYYY SLOWLY) open the cage door and reach my hand into it. It looked at if it was about to jump away, but I pause every time it got ready and continue with my slowness. Soon I was very near it but then it jumped away (SO CLOSE) I tried this again and again and again until I got it on my finger (but for a very short amount of time)
3rd day : I continuously do this process until both of them only moved a foot or so when I approach (facing me :D) And I continue letting the green one on my finger and let it off whenever it feels like it (which is about 1-3 seconds). I did this again and again until it didn't flinch or anything when I approach. SUDDENLY, while I was about to put my hand in, they were staring at their food bowl and looks like they wanted to eat. So, I hand fed them and stuff. Afterwards, the green one (female) regurgitated for the yellow one :3 :budgie:
4th day : I hand fed them, did the process of step-up and stuff, etc..
Today : The green one is sitting on my finger for a long time (probably because my finger is very warm now that winter is beginning :D) while the yellow sits near the bars.

OKAY, so the green one is pretty tolerance of me, but the yellow is not.. I'm buying millet tomorrow and thinking of bribing it to get on my finger :D anyways, is there a way to approach the yellow one? Since it is progressing slower than the green one... :/ I can't even get near it without it jumping away UNLESS my attention is on the green one. So.. help? And is there another more effective way to tame them? Thanks :D :swaying:

Your yellow one has not yet adjusted. The green one knows this and is feeding it like a baby.

I have two male lovebirds the same age. One will feed the other about once a day. Usually in the morning. I guess the other one is a slow morning starter.

It is like have two kids with different personalities. They are not the same - don't act the same - and can't be treated the same.

Your green one will help you calm your yellow one. Just keep praising your green one.
