I got the training perch from Michael!

Postby Kiwiwade » Tue Nov 08, 2011 12:27 am

I got a training perch from Michael and been training my baby Pionus on it. My bird Poe seems to like the texture of the perch ( dragon wood) because it isn't sliply.

I am trying to train her, but now she knows that the perch = treats, so every time I put her on it, she would just bob her head and make the dolphin like begging sound. It's so intense to the point we cannot even train! Will baby birds stop doing this begging thing one day??
I'm not in hurry to make her Kili or Truman, but was wondering if she will beg for food like this forever....?

My bird is a 6 month old Blue Headed Pionus.

Truman used to do the same thing till he reached about one year old and eventually he stopped. The younger birds are used to food just being handed to them that they aren't always ready to work for it. I suggest getting him less hungry or prefeeding so he isn't hungry to the point of begging. Most of the food management stuff applies to older birds and not babies. Just play with him, tame him, get him used to all kinds of objects and people. And if you can get a little training in here and there, great. When he's older, he'll be just as good at learning tricks.

I agree with Michael. Handling and playing with your bird daily to make him tame and friendly is essential. And getting him/her used to new things and socializing him with new people and places is one of the best kinds of training. :)
