Training my bird to sit on the perch

Postby azgardezi » Tue Nov 15, 2011 10:40 am

I have a baby lovebird that I am raising up these days. Can anyone suggest how I can train it to sit on it's perch and stay there until removed by me or any other person? (My African grey hardly stays on its perch unless its night time and he is sleepy). :gray:

Well I suppose nailing its feet to the perch would do what you want. Clipping the wings would have a mostly similar effect.

Otherwise you have to mostly accept that the bird will go where it wants and you need to shape the environment for that to be safe. Providing toys, treats, and things to do on the perch will help but still won't prevent it from getting bored and going some place else. Flight recall training also serves to teach a parrot to stay on the perch and wait for the call. But this is only a short term solution to getting the bird to stay till called. The main thing is to just get used to the fact that it is a living breathing bird and has the freedom to fly around at will.
