Cannot keep in room

Postby Zooey » Sun Nov 20, 2011 7:22 pm

Ok, so I'm training my budgies, and the method is really good. But I have a big problem with what should be the easiest part: taking them out of the cage and onto a training perch. I tried that once and Perry flew into another room and smack into a mirror. He's fine now.
What can I do to get them out without flying away and into mirrors?

Take the cage into a small room or closet before taking them out until you can get them trained. Doing a lot of target training at first helps too. But if they are flighted it's inevitable that they will take some flight to get a hang of it. But if you established some training initially, should make it a lot easier to get them back to you.

I keep them a small room where I train them, but the problem is that the door to the room Perry flew into fell off. The only other small room is carpeted, and I don't want them pooping all over there and getting seed hulls all over the floor. Every dinner is target training, and I can get Perry to walk outside the cage onto my arm, but he promptly perches back in the cage. So what can I do?

Just now it happened with Lemonlime. Part of the problem is that they're so hungry that they practically run over and try to get to the stick before I cue them. Maybe they're afraid of the floor and not my hands; the instant she felt the wood beneath her feet she took off like a crazed flying hyena. She jumped onto the floor all by herself to get the stick, then flew. I'm worried about her. She used to live in a huge cage with 5 other budgies, and she wasn't afraid to slam into the wall, then the mirror, then the hall door, then the wall, then the door again.
Basically is there some training method to get them not to fly away?

I've been doing some thinking about this, and I think that maybe an aviary will help? Maybe I can train them in there, and they can't fly into another room where I have to chase them. Do you think it would work?

Sorry, I am not very knowledgable with budgies, but it seems to me you need to work on more basic taming before continuing with training.

Try working with target training inside the cage, move onto getting step up to work. Then try to get the bird comfortable with you touching it. That way you should be able to carry it around your house, letting it know its environment. Hope it works out :) .

That's exactly what I'm doing. Perry can step up, and they can both target. Perry's pretty comfortable with me petting him, but only in the cage. Then they fly.
But would an aviary work?

Zooey - what do you mean that they are hungry?
Hungry animals are deprived animals. If you went to school hungry could you learn? NO
Animals that are well fed are the ones who play and learn.

So I'll give them a small meal before they train, and thentrain them. Would that work better with them?
