Is he biting because he's young?

Postby Kath » Thu Nov 24, 2011 8:10 am

Ako is doing great progress. I can target him inside and, for 2 days now, outside the cage. But still, sometimes he bites me hard without any reason, like when I'm doing something on PC and I hold a mouse I suddenly get bitten. And sometimes instead of taking a treat from me Ako is not paying attention what I hold in my fingers - bites my fingers... But he's still a chick I guess, not even fully coloured yet. Maybe I started training him ant letting go out of cage too soon?

My guess is though he's doing great targeting, he still isn't tame yet. Taming and trick training are two different things. Spend time with him not training. Have him sit on you while watching TV or reading a book. Slowly (and with lots of treats) get him used to being touched all over.

Also, you mentioned that he sometimes bites you when you're on the computer. I think he could be trying to tell you "I want attention!" Some birds want to have your undivided attention when they are out with you. Try having him on your lap and give him some scritches while on the computer, and then he will not feel so ignored.

Thanks for advice :) I think he's becoming more tame every day. Usually when he sits on my shoulder he bites my ear hard but recently I have noticed that biting becomes less painful - Ako starts biting gently. Still hurts on hands though but I can see a lot of progress
I'm still not able to touch him but I guess I just need to be patient. I used to have many rodents (rabbit, gerbil, rat etc.) and with a bird it is soooo different ;)
I think the biggest progress is that he won't bath without me ^_^ If I put a bowl with water next to him - he won't go in if I walk away - it's so cute :D
Here's a link to Ako's bath:
