how to make 2 sun conures bond

Postby john94 » Wed Dec 07, 2011 6:35 pm

so i have a 10+ year old female sun conure named tango who only been bonded to me for a couple months. and a 2 year old male sun conure named cheeto who i just got recently. im trying to make them both bonded. its only been a couple days now that they have been seeing each other and i have there cages side by side. neither of them are aggressive or afraid of each other. cheeto the male really likes and wants to be around tango and has gone as far as "protecting" her when i'm around. but the thing is tango is very bonded with me and doesn't want him. and if he gets toooo close to her she pecks at him and screams like "get away from me!" and wont even let anyone else touch her when I'm around. but they can both share a perch at times and sit side by side but again not too close. cheeto tried to preen her earlier and she got mad and pecked at him. now i've paid close attention to both of them and i have been seeing some parallel activities such as eating, playing, drinking water and self preening all at the same time. so i imagine that would be a good sign of progress. now since i got cheeto i have stopped petting tango underneath her wings and anywhere else besides her head and neck. so what do you guys recommend should I maybe "loosen" my bond with tango and give them more time to themselves in side by side cages? or just give it more time? what do i do??? :?

First and foremost you must accept that they may not end up bonding or even being safe around each other. Otherwise just let it happen naturally and see where it goes, but be ready to separate them if necessary.

You can't make them bond. Just let them bond to you. As long as they tolerate each other they can just be roomates.

They can feel the emotion of jealousy. Don't give the second more attention than the first.

We had my GCC for about a year before my sun, and the GCC bonded with and loves us. When we got the sun, we put thier cages within ear shot of each other, then with in line of sight with each other, and then right next to each other. Somewhere along the way we let them play together...with supervision, then we put them together. They bonded great. So great, that the sun likes the GCC more than my wife and I. Luckily the GCC still loves us. '

Just be careful that they don't bond so much, that you are no longer needed.
