My Senagal Parrots =) need a little help

Hello everybody =)

Yesterday I have got my two Senegal Parrots. They are sooo cute !! =) :senegal: :senegal:

Image

Now i hope i am getting some tips so i can get to the click training.
They dont freak out when im standing near the cage.
But when i want to Feed them with a treet they change the side of the cage or just watch me and ignore my hand.

They dont scream or so they just look at me quietly.
When i get realy slow to the cage i can get my hand near to them.

They where feed with seeds. So i gave them a mix of seeds and palats.

Do you have any advices to get them taking the treets out of my hand ?

Tanks for your help =)

best regards
Toni

p.s. is it better that the cage is in a seperate room where im not all the time, or is it better if the cage is in the room where i am all the time??

I am glad you got two. That is why they are not noisy.
Keep them with you so you can bond faster. It will be a little harder to bond with two but you can do it. Spend as much time as possible with them even if you talk to yourself when you are around them. Let them out whenever you can to join in your world and not the inner cage.

Tanks =)
I thought i should theach them target training before i get them out of the cage like the wizzard say it in his video. I am just looking now what are there fafourit treet,
If got them bananas apples seeds pallets and cooked vagatables. They take there time to get to the food.

I am siting long time near the cage and hold a treet for them in the cage from outside.

What i see is they stop eating when i watch them.

I realy dont want to rush them so i let them a little time in the cage as they are okey with me and get treets from my hand.

is this okey ??

tanks for your awnser!

Yes, they still don't know who you are or if they can trust you, so don't rush into training. Since you just got them, they're still settling in. Just spend some time near them, talking to them and offering them treats. Don't be surprised if they ignore the fruit and vegetables if they're used to eating seeds only. If they don't eat the fresh food in the bowl, they won't take it from your hand (at least not until they know you better). Try offering some of the bigger pieces of their seed mix by hand. That's what they're familiar with and what they'll be more willing to take from your hand. If they seem to be scared of your hands, you could try putting the seeds in a big spoon and once they take become more comfortable, move on to a smaller spoon and finally straight from your hand.

So its the 3rd day

They enoy there cage with all the toys !
I think they are still afraid of me. When i go in the room they stop eating they stop playing around
and they freez where they are and just watch me.
I saw the love aples so i took a slice and try to feed by hand or with a spoon. badly they change the side of the cage and just staring @ me.

When i change whater and food they freak a bit because i have to open the cage and take out the bowls.

I sit 3 times a day 15-30 minutes by them and talk nice with them so they get know my voice.

i hope they will get taim by time so i can feed them by hand and can start the target training =)

If i could i would cudle with them all the day but i think that needs some more time.

Have they gotten used to you by now?

How did u fix this problem?

I'm about to buy a senegal parrot soon, but only one.
Looking forward to train him but i'm affraid i could have the same problem. That he will fear me. But i will wait weeks befor handfeeding.

My 2nd fearness is how i will teach them to eat from my hand when they in the cage.

I will also start with a big spoon, then a smaller spoon then my hand.

I would slowly wean off the seeds while introducing more fresh vegetables and some fruit. Seeds are fatty and have low nutritional value. They can be used for treats/training but not in free feeding. As for feeding do you let them have a constant available source of food? If so this can lead to weight/health issues developing down the road. Personally I keep to two feedings daily as a form of food management. One might want to introduce food through the cage before feedings because at this point the birds more receptive to food offerings and will see you in a positive light which will speed up the bonding process. From there you can proceed to target training. I train my :senegal: every night before his nightly meal as he is more reponsive to training and interested in the treats offered. I am in no way "starving" the bird, but using proper food management for health reasons and motivation. Some here will disagree with this and say it is "cruel" and food should be available at all times but this is simply not a realistic situation for a wild animal. IMO its no different than having your child wait to eat dinner rather than eating a bag of doritos beforehand. I havent dealt with having two birds simutaniously and cannot comment on percieved problems in taming/training going forward but take each positive step and build upon it.

Hope this helps,

Wayne
