I did read someone here used the word gentle to tell the parrot that he is biting to hard, and it seemed to work for him. in my opinion if that works and ouch should work just as fine, seeing the parrot doesnt know the difference between gentle and ouch unless it is thought. however yelling ouch might not be a good idea. but saying ouch or whatever might be usable as a command to let go.

So far i havn't had any troubles with biting from Polarn, so havn't really spent to much effort into how to train it not to bite. I know there is a "webinar" hosted by Chet & Dave Womach on howto get your bird stop biting. I received an invite thrue mail to it and registred in time to get a spot for it. got a spot thuesday next week. dont know if it is too late to register for it now or if it is still possible. this particular "webinar" is free to attend.

Everytime Ako bites I just tap him with my finger (usualy in his forehead) and I say "NO!" or do a "xsssst!!!" sound. It works - he doesn't bite, only very gentle it tickles
Sometimes he seems to forget how hard he can bite but as soon as I say NO he just turns and walks away for few seconds ;)
Just for your notice: I don't hurt him - my tapping him isn't hard, just to let him know that I'm the one in charge.

Did you tell the man in the pet shop that he is stupid and should never be around animals?

When Myrtle gets into something and won't listen to "no" I use her original fear of hands by opening mine with my fingers spread wide and palm in her direction. She knows what I mean and does not fault me for how I do it. It is an across the room signal and I do not have to be near her.

I never hit my kids but they knew the rime "see my finger - see my thumb - see my fist you better run". If they miss behaved in public rather than make a sean I would give them the hand signals. They understood.

I also tried letting my grey out a few times, but he didn't come out. I keep the cage open for hours on Sunday, the best he did was step one foot on the door, stick his head out to look around, and then retreated back to his perch. I tried watching, not watching, leaving the room... to no avail. In fact, when I went back to the room, he was already resting with one foot on his perch. But then... like you, I have no sure way to get him back to the cage, so in a way, I am glad he didn't come out actually.

I would like to know how you are going put your bird back too! Good luck.

Hello ^_^
Hey, I have a VERY easy method if Ako doesn't want to come back to his cage. Just wait till dark - parrots are completly blind when it's dark - and just grab him from behind through towel. He won't know it's you. Put him in cage, close the cage door and turn the light on
The only thing you have to remember is to don't get scared and don't let go if jojo scream - it won't hurt him, he will just be confused, won't know what grabbed him. Because if you let go he will fly around the room and probably hit the wall or something. But if you will let go, you just light the room immediately and wait till he calms down.
No trauma will be done - I can tell - Ako is fine and in the beginning I was using this method quite often :D
BTW, they say same thing about lovebirds in Poland - that they're stupid and loud and stuff. I can see Ako is a smart parrot with a lot of temper, around the age of jojo :P
The guy is just stupid, doesn't know a thing about animals. Don't pay attention to what he says - you know better - you own him

All the best,
Kath

PS, Lovebirds can't talk as well but I don't mind. They just do similar sound to human talking. But so what?! Dogs don't talk as well and nobody seems to have a problem with that.

I kind of have the same trouble with Polarn not returning to the cage for a long time and I do keep his food and water inside the cage becouse I do want him to go there every now and then. Sometimes he goes there to eat or drink. But like yesterday he didn't go back to the cage at all so it ended with me grabbing him over his back to put him in the cage. He emediatly ate some and drank so after about 20 minutes I opened the door again. He stayed in the cage for a while playing with a toy then he flew out and landed on top of the curtain. Satisfied he had actually eaten some I went to bed. This morning when I woke up he was sitting in his cage on the perch right next to me (got the cage next to the bed). This was the first time he has made his way to the cage to sleep. Have had to catch him several times to get him back just for the food and water. Hopefully he has understood now that he may fly back and forth as he likes. But he has only been here 12 days now so might have to catch him some more times. Good thing is that he no longer tries to bite me when I grab him. He still won't step up but he shakes hand when I tell him to greet. For a great ofc, just hope I can evolve this one finger action into stepping up by presenting 2 fingers eventually.
