Tips on taming conures

Postby Raccoonlassie » Wed Dec 21, 2011 12:35 pm

I will be bringing my new birds home in a few weeks and had a few questions on how I should go about starting to tame/bond with them.
They are a bonded pair of adult conures that came from a bad situation. They have been in a foster home for about 2 months and are just now taking crackers from the foster moms hand through the cage bars.
So I have several questions. One is how soon would be too soon to teach them to step up on my hand? I know they will need a week or so to just get used to my home and the new noises. But after this would it be alright to go ahead and start teaching them.
Because of their situation and the fact that the only companion they had for who knows how long was each other, what is a good way to help them bond with me and realize that I can be a good companion also. The rescue said they get stressed whenever seperated. How should I handle this when training and such so I can work with just one, or is this possible?

Just show them you love them. Sing to them. Get close to the cage and tell them secrets. Tell them they are pretty. If you know their names use them alot.

My method is to let them out of the cage and let them fly until they are tired. Even the wild tiels would step up for help when they were tired. First contact was wonderful. Of course I had to do it many times before they would just step up when I wanted them to.

Thanks Liz. I am planning on having them right by my desk so I will be with them alot. I am always singing as I go around the house so that will be easy. I also have records and cassete tapes of birds singing that I hope they will like. I thought it would give them something to listen to and engage them a bit sometimes.
I think maybe I should've put a different title on my post as it sounds more like I am giving tips than needing them:(
I know that one of them isn't flighted right now. They trimmed him so that he can glide to land but can't really fly, because he has surgery to remove a lump on his chest about 2.5 months ago. They wanted him to keep a bit more still. As crazy as this sounds I am not totally sure whether they trimmed the other boy. I plan on leaving them flighted because we have dogs and cats also. Although they will not be allowed together accidents happen and I want the birds to have an escape. Besides I'm sure they'll love to fly. So I might try to let them fly till tired:)
I just don't want to make a crazy mistake that will do me more harm than good.
