My Two Senegals dont take rewards

Postby Marown » Mon Jan 09, 2012 7:37 am

Hello every one!

Im Toni from Austria. I have two senegal Perrots since the 7.december
They are one year old and i named them Luke and Lea because they are brother and sisster ( starwars )

The are reared by there parents so they are a little human shie.

I tried to taiming them but it is so hard. At first i am making a pellets diet and the like the pellets!
So i was thankfull so i can taim them with seeds and so on.

Here my stratigy i bought some apples ( because if i give them a mix of everything they piked them out as first ) and tried to feed them through the cage sticks. but they dont tink about it to take it whe i am holding the apple. The same story with seeds.

My next plan was to mount a china stick on a branch so they took the apple from it, but they only want to step up the stick and dont eat the treet.

Yesterday i tought it was time to let them out the first time. I think it was to early. I opend the cage and go away a little bit. after a while the come out and they immediately chasing to the curtain rod. ( just that you know my room is 3,5meters high )

I let them outside for 2 hours and when i come near they staring to fly around. My only chance was to get them on the floor so i can catch them.

Luke made fly arround and missed the landing so i could grap him ( with a leather glove )
Lea was another story i tried to get her to step up the stick but she didnt so after a long time i poked her from the curtain rod so i could catch her on the floor.

So my question is sombody have some advices so i can make some process with my two jong senegals.

to get it to a point how i make them feel okey to eat treets from my hand??

I realy love them they are so sweet and they playing so mutch.

I hope i can get them tame so i can get them out of the cage and start target training.

Thanks for your help and i am realy sorry about my english!!!

best regards
Tony

First of all, make sure they know the treats. Don't be surprised if they've never had apple or seeds before if you've never offered them. So at first let them get used to the treats on their own without you by putting a little in the food bowl. Once you know they've eaten them and like them, try putting a few in the bowl and watching from a distance, next time put in bowl and sit near cage, etc. So the parrots learn to eat in your presence. This may take a few tries or it can take months depending on the situation. Once you're at the point they ignore you and go over to bowl to eat treat in your presence, you have a better chance of getting them to take it from you through the bars and then continuing with the outlined training program.

what I did with Polarn, who is parent raised and didnt want me to give him something from my hands in the beginning was simply hen he knew apples ere tasty (also had em cut the same way all the time) i started placing them inside his cage, then move away. wait for him to walk up and take it then i did it again. first times it took him hours before he walked over to take it. but after a while he walked up to it right away as soon as i removed my hand. i then started to place them close and closer to him. eventually i was close enough for him to take it from my hand but he still wouldnt so then i placed it by his feet instead. but after a little while he started to take em out of my hands. Now he comes flying if i call on him and present a treat, kinda telling him i wont walk to him to give it to him but he has to come get it himself. he still wont let me pet him but he enjoys playing with me with his foot toys, and also lands on me whenever im still long enough. also has started to step up on my arm... sometime, i might add... either he steps up when i hold it infront of him or he walks off and tries anything to get the treat, waving or try find my hand to "shake hands".... just have patience and they will start trusting you.

On a sidenote though, I think they can manage outside the cage for more than two hours, but eventually you will have to take em back if they dont return themselves to eat or drink. Ive sed it before and will say it again, Polarns cage isn't closed and that gives him the possibility to come to me in his own tempo, even though im there every now and then pushing his comfort zone a little he will come closer and closer to me all the time, either sitting on the shoulder, leg or whatever or just sit next to me. Birds are curious and eventually they cant fight the urge to come grab tha pen your scribbling with, or check out that keyboard your clicking away on al the time etc. it will require you room/house to be birdproof tho to have em out the whole days.

Thank you very mutch for the awnser!

They eat when im 2-3 Meters away from the cage. they eat apples and so. i will make 2 days a special meal with fruits seeds and pellets so i can see what they like. I allready made this but maybe they need this for a few days.

Then i will train to get closer and closer to the cage when they are eating.
I hope this workes.

Hi Tony,

two of my Cags are parent raised birds and when we first got them, there was always panic and we could not get near the aviary. Cleaning was a desaster. So what I did at first was, I put a little bowl inside the cage that I could reach from the outside and dropped a peace of walnut in there. He walked to the bowl when I stepped back and took his nut. Toto liked it very much and within a week I got him so far to touch my finger. When he did, he received his nut.
Than I put the Bowl outside and he learned very quickly, for touching my finger he will receive a piece of nut. when I wanted him to go back in the aviary, as well as the 3 others I put the bowl back inside and drop a few nuts and always made it a rule to say " go home". I still do it that way, they are all in within 20 seconds. LOL Build trust first and than slowly, when you see the bird is calm, extend your lesson. That is how I did it, worked fine.
