touching the birds

Postby donald1954 » Tue Jan 17, 2012 12:55 am

Hi everybody,

I have got a question to Michael this time. My birds are quite tame, all step up, all go to the aviary, they turn around, some of them can do more tricks than others. But, touching is a probem. I have seen your video about it. Well, my birds have no proplem beeing touched at their beaks, feet. I can lay them in by hand, that is all fine, but they do not like to be touched for a headscratch at all. When I notice they are uncomfortable with it I stopped. somewhere in the line I must do a mistake, but dont see where. Have you got some advice?

I know you did not ask me but...

Myrtle was untouchable when I got her. I went from a 1 finger tickle of her feet to touching her beak. She liked that so I left a finger up to stroke her face too. I eventually was able to scratch her head with 1 finger. Now I can touch her anywhere as long as I say "tickle tickle" first.

I am now trying the same method on Rambo who would never let me under his wings.

@ Micheal - thanks Michael, I missed out on the toweling. that is one thing I have not done so far. Thanks very much.

@ Liz - yes I can touch and wipe the beak, the feet and also the legs. Toto ist the only one I can touch. I can touch his belly, his wings, but not his head. Funny is I can, when I have them on my hand, turn them around and lay them in my other hand. They execpt it, no excitement. But they wont let me touch their head. Beak touching ist fine, I can even hold it for a while, but when I try to go underneath with my finger, nip! Never mind, I dont give up, one day the will enjoy it too.

I will try the toweling, shouldnt be a big problem, because we somethimes play hiding and I put a towel over them, waiting for them to come out. It is just the grabbing what is new. Will tell you how it goes.

For touching use the same concept as towel without the towel. It's really the same method just different applications of taming.
