My bird hates me but loves my mom?!

Postby litlrich » Tue Jan 24, 2012 11:33 pm

So I have a mustache parakeet which is a female, and if you have seen a mustache parakeet you will see their beaks are huge! I have my parrot 'Mo' in my room and no one usually comes in my room. She always has her cage open, I am always the one to feed her, change her water, clean her cage, and try and tame her. So when ever I try and go near her she backs up and bends down and hisses, and then she just lie pounces at me and tries to bite me. Its always hard to change her food with out her running in there and sitting on it so I cant change it. When she bites, it hurts soo bad and I bleed a lot. So I noticed that she was loosing feathers on the top of her neck and her lower body, I'm assuming that she is malting because she isn't plucking them. So I left to go visit some family for 4 days and when I'm in the car coming back home my mom tells me that the bird is all calm, my mom has been afraid of this bird since we got it, she never wanted to like try and touch it or anything. So she tells me that that the bird let her pet it and scratch her neck and everything and I was like 'Thats awesome!'. So I got home and I went into my room and I went to go and pet her, and as usual she tries and bite me. So I leave the room and my mom goes in and shes petting it when I walk back in and I have no idea how! My mom thinks that she may be in heat, like wanting to mate, because when ever my mom pets her she always sticks her tail up and he butt. I was able to get the bird on my arm and I put her in my moms room and she walked right onto my moms arm while she was petting her. She likes to cuddle and everything with my mom...

Can someone please help me and tell me what I can do to fix this?! I am really getting upset because I payed a lot for this bird and it doesn't even like me! Could this be because she is in heat that she actually likes someone, because she never liked me..?

I really need some advise, ty :( :irn:

Hi ltlrich,
to help you, we need a little more information about you and your bird.
The normal routine like cleaning the cage, feeding who does it in your family, is it you or your mum?

When you go into your room, when you come home, what do you do? How do you approach the bird?
It would be very helpful, if you could explain a little more detail. There is a lot to it, yes we will do training of course, I would just like to know what happens when you enter the room and how you do it.

Waiting for your reply,

kind rgds, Don + Karin

first off, the bird doesnt realize you have paid anything for it, so it has no obligations to like you. what makes a bird like you is the way you interact with it, however it is not too unusuall a bird do bond to someone else besides the owner, however a bird can be social and playful with multiple persons. My little amazon for example gets really excited whenever my brother comes to visit, he knows he will always use the most tasty treats when recalling him or asking him to wave etc so he struts all over the place... I'd say, I cant eally tell who between us he "likes" the most but with other people (even people that are here more often than my brother) he is somewhat more reserved, wont bite or anything tho, but needs a little more time before he interacts...

So I would say that even if your mother is allowed to pet your bird etc right now, this doesn't mean that you wont be able too as well.

Don't take anything for granted. Start from the beginning with proper taming and training:

Some birds prefer certain genders over others. I used to have a senegal parrot that prefered men. Maybe your bird prefers women?
