changing step up behaviour

hi everybody,
i want to ask about step up behaviour.
my cockatoo is completly tame,he let me to touch n do everything to him like open his wings,grab his back etc,but he always refuse to step up.
in first day he step up very well,i say the same command from his ex-owner.
but today, when i ask him he step one of his leg n he bite n he back up-dsnt step up.
why he do that?i tried again,he step 1 leg-bite-runaway.is it about trust because im new for him??
is it possible to fix it?he likes to explore my house n there is some parts its dangerous for him.n about the wing,is clipped.the ex owner clipped his wing so he cant fly to avoid dangerous stuff.
what the best i can do??

I'd say let his wings grow out and hopefully he wont pluck the flightfeathers off. about the stepping up, you could hold a perch above your hand slightly further away from your hand (like a lever, but dont let him use it) I know this sometimes is successful with birds who bites the hand when stepping up, so you kind of trick the bird to want to grab the perch instead when stepping up, but do not let him. then you fade the perch further and further away until he doesnt need it. However this method is usually used on birds using their beak to get levarage when stepping up but still do step up... so if it is a confidence thing it might not work with your bird...

hi polarn,
i tried to trick him with perch,he really hate it.i think the owner always ignore his bite everytime he ask the bird to step up,n its becoming habit for him.honestly i cant ignore it.he can crack walnut shell in 1 min n i cant imagine what he gonna do to my hand(he already give me 3 vampire bite until now).i tried to wear gloves n sleeves,he likes it more!!he force me to give my gloves to him,he want to play with it.
i dont get,how come in first day he really good at stepping up?i just approach my hand n he step up.if he is full flight i dont really care he will step up or not,but now he only can walk n climb n i need to watch out him for 24 hours.sometimes he do dancing n beg for me to pick him up(wants to go to gym)n i give my arm,he step one leg-bite again.he also like to follow me walking around the house to get head n wing scratch.grrrrr what a difficult to have clipped parrot

hi melon, he is new and is going to test you. if you read the sites recommended you know you are going to be bitten. i was bit 3 times yesterday because the night before she was too busy playing and did not eat any of the food i cooked for her only her pellots i had to cage her since i do childcare during the day. i went down to the kitchen and cooked her favorite multicolored pasta and she was good the rest of the day. my too prefers cooked food with a little pellots available to snack all day. she gets steamed veggies,pasta[veggie flavored], fruit, somtimes yogurt too much dairy is not good. don't take biting personal.

It sounds like you cockatoo has been through a lot in his life.

It sounds like he has been on a bad diet and does not feel good. I suggest you not feed him rice but give him everything else including pellets. Not all birds take to vegies but will eat fruit. (My son is that way.) His temperment will change with a healthy diet. He will feel better.

As for the step up biting - don't ask him to step up. Don't give him the attention of wanting him to step up. Let him fit into your life instead of your life revolving around him. Let him follow you and get used to you. When he starts feeling better he will come to you and want you to step him up.

My birds do not bite but Myrtle is fasinated with the bones in my fingers. She likes to mouth my fingers and feel the bones.

yes i understand,he tricks me alot,give really cute dance n innocent look n when i try to pick him,bite.i hope it stop one day,i still keep trying to make him step up.
sadly the owner only give him rice,i think he never give him fruits or vegie,thanks for the advice.

oh ya,i want to ask i find out his poop colour is normal but have little bit of small buble.is it ok?or because he just adapted to new invoirement that makes him like that?

He has been through a lot mentally and physically in the last 48 hours. What he eats and what he poops go together. Add to his diet and see if there is a change.

liz,is it ok to give frozen veggie?n how u give corn to ur baby??is it fresh/steam/cook?
he dsnt eat much now,i call the owner he said i must to set a big cover on the floor n eat together with him.its funny,i tried it n he give me small dance,but he still shy to come beside me on the floor

Mine will eat vegies fresh, frozen or canned. Thaw the frozen ones. When I share vegies I seperate them from my food before I add salt and butter. I made noodles this morning and seperated some for my birds before I added salt and butter.

hi melon, cute dance for my too means hands off. she will also charge me when she runs or bounces toward me i know she wants to bite so i put my hand up if she keeps coming at me i put my hand on top of her head avoiding her beak using no pressure just resting on her head and tell her be nice then she'll turn her head and rub my hand and i'll give her a scratch. the time she bit to bone i calmly went out to clean up and bandage then went right up to her and pet her, she was shaking, i told her it was o.k. the bite was my fault i got to comfortable to fast. she loves my boyfriend who spends maybe 5mins a day with her,annoying since i spend about 8hrs a day playing, cuddling,and talking to her, she hates me being near him and i sat right next to him with her on my shouldershe hopped off went to kiss him then came back to me to rip my face off for sitting next to 'her' man lucky for my face i put my hand. now i sit at one end him on the other that's when she charges.
