Lynyrd's Taming

Postby Guardian » Wed Feb 01, 2012 10:17 pm

I've been looking into Michael's videos and blogs, I really enjoy what I see there. I have been using touch-the-beak technique with Lynyrd, but he doesn't really seem to enjoy it once I get my finger there on his beak.

Today though, we had a breakthrough with water.

I wanted to see if he held any fear of the spray bottle so I was spraying a mist away from him to see if he would enjoy it when it floated back to him.

Well this sprung him into full "I NEED TO BATHE NOW." mode. He started to play in his water dish, which was much too small for him. So I went and got one of my pyrex bowls (biggest/shallowist thing I had on hand) and filled it up for him.

He didn't seem interested, so I started playing in it. Still didn't seem interested. So I started to take it out and-- he dove in. TWICE.

I've never tamed a bird through water before. But he seems to have built a little more trust for me after today with the water bowl. :)

Edit: Hahaha. Now that he likes me he wants to scream for my attention. Yay. Lmao.

I've never had a scared/aggressive animal do such a 180 before just because of one event.

He calls for me, he mimicks my laugh, he wants to hang out on my shoulder/hand or on his stand in the corner of the room. He isn't frightened when I reach into his cage (unless I start messing around with stuff and then he starts screaming angrily: this does not include cleaning, cleaning is fine: Moving perches is not.)

He is talking, but for the life of me I can't understand what he's saying. The words I do get are: "Yeah" "Hahahaha." "Pretty Bird (kind of)." It's all conure garble talk. He also makes this sound when he's calling for me that I'm pretty sure are human words... I just can't distinguish the garble from the phrase.

I'm rather surprised, I really thought it was going to take months for him to stop 'nipping' at me. Though if he switches back for some reason I'll take things back to the 'step one'.
