Help with lonely budgie

Postby ChewToy » Sat Feb 11, 2012 6:55 pm

My little budgie sky, has been acting strangely lately. When she ets out of the cage all she wants to do is sit at a mirror. And shes een chirping alot except when she has a mirror. I have started target training with her and she was doing really well but not she isnt really interested. I think sky may be lonely but hasnt really taken to human interaction. Are there any bonding exercises i could try with her?

Is it possible to remove the mirror? I think I would probably start there. How long have you had sky and how much time do you usually spend with her?

You could try introducing some scratching/petting around the cheeks, beak, top of the head and neck area.
If your bird is comfortable enough around you then start by slowly putting your finger near it's beak. If it doesn't panic then slowly touch the beak then scratch the cheeks right where the beak is. Once it learns that petting is nice it will soon accept pets/scratches all around the neck, face and head area.
I started that way and now my budgie absolutely loves scratches and pets. He will fluff up and beg to be scratched around the cheeks especially.
I think it's a great way to bond. Plus, once your budgie trusts you to pet him/her you can also preen little pin feathers, which is something budgies would do for each other in the wild to interact and bond.
