Bites with new tricks. Advice?

Postby lwis » Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:51 pm

I have taught Darwin how to dance and kiss on cue as well as spin. I am trying to teach him wave and then wings, but every time I put my hand near him he bites and then spins. He doesn't spin every time he bites, but he does sometimes, and I obviously do not reward him for the spin. He doesn't usually bite when I offer my finger for him to step up or even if I touch his wings for him to lift them. The only time is when he is training on his perch. It is almost like he gets mad because he knows spin and that is all he wants to do.
Any suggestions on how to move forward with training without making him more nippy??

mine doesnt bite, however he sometimes just refuses to do some tricks or learn new ones, but as soon as i bring forth the targetstick or asks him to wave or something he already knows really good, he gets all happy and excited. So I ask him to do what he already knows in the beginning of each session to "pump him up" a little, once he has gotten the good attention of a couple of well known tricks he is immidietly more interested in trying tricks not yet perfected or learn new ones.

Might be worth a shot, just ask him first thing of a session to spin around and dance and spin around then something he kind of knows what to do etc. just as a warmup for the session. once i figured that out with my amazon it worked wonders for us interacting. However, I dont know if it'll work with yours.

Thank you for the suggestion. But I already start my training sessions with tricks he is familiar with, and I also end with them. I have also tried jumping into a new behaviour, but no luck, once he is on the perch and sees the clicker he is spinning, dancing, or kissing, and if my hand goes near him during that time it is getting bit. I feel like I am making him more nippy; completely defeating the purpose of training. I mean, his bites are never really bad, but I just don't want him to learn if he bites harder he gets what he wants.

that is a whole different situation and unfortunitly I only know what works with mine, but as i said he doesnt bite he just looks at me as if thinking "you serious! do you really expect me to do something so pitty as spinning in a cirlce, I'll leave that for the poodle!" but as soon as he has gotten to do a couple of things I know he think is funny he seems to enjoy spinning around etc as well hehe.
