Still having problems

Postby Zooey » Mon Apr 02, 2012 7:41 pm

Ok, so I made a post awhile back talking about my problem with Perry never wanting to come out.
Ever since Lemonlime passed, she's been way less cooperative. Now she won't even come near the front of the cage if it's open.
Why is this? I try so hard, but she won't come out.

she may be in mourning.i went through the opposite with penny :gcc: when we lost cebal :amazon: he wouldn't stay off me for 12 hrs a day except when i got him off to run out the door.it only stopped when i brought in another bird.he had never lived without another bird before.some suggestions i got since i didn't know if i wanted to add another bird were new toys or bird prozac which i didn't feel comfortable doing.new toys didn't work for him but i decided i was ready for another bird anyway after a few months.

When you say you "try so hard" can you describe precisely what it is you're trying/have tried? :) What have you got on offer when you are trying to coax Perry out of the cage?

I try to get her at least out of the cage. I have a full bowl of seed to bring her out, I try to target her out of the cage, I have her step up to my hand and try to target out onto my arm, etc.

So i take it she's already good at targeting as a behaviour? :) Is the bowl of seed you're offering the same as the seed she has free access to inside her cage? Perhaps you could try offering a different reinforcer, maybe spray millet (popular with most budgies).

I give millet as a treat, and seed mix is a rare delicacy for her.

I guess if she rarely gets seed/millet and she's still finding her cage more reinforcing/safe than coming out of the cage to interact then we'll have to think harder about why she doesn't want to come out. Has she ever been forced out of her cage (doesn't sound like it) or given any other reason to think that being out of the cage might not be a positive experience? Do you train when she's most hungry (maybe remove all food from the cage overnight and train first thing in the morning)?

Well, she has, but each time she flew smack into the window and the wall and the window and the door and the wall.
Maybe there's something that has to do with that.
