How to reward a budgie?

Postby ChewToy » Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:37 pm

My cousin and I both got budgies at the same time, and while my budgie Sky has taken to click conditioning using millet, my cousin's budgie Haven has not. we have left long peices of millet in his cage, and he will not even touch it. and other bird treats we're found have been too large for a little parakeet. so what else can we use to reward a bird other than millet spray? he won't take small seeds from between her fingers. :budgie:

Millet spray is best. If not, then whatever he normally eats.

but all he normally eats is seed and bits of fruit that are stuck in his cage.. but he won't take to fruit as a treat. I've never actually seen a budgie that doesn't like millet..

Will he take seed out of a little pot rather than between your fingers. I sometimes put lots of things into one little dish and let them choose their own reward, I do this because sometimes I worry I'm overusing certain treats. It seems to work quite well once they got used to me shoving a dish under their noses lol.

When I say shove it under their noses I didn't mean that literally. You can condition the bird slowly so s/he isn't scared of it. Get him used to eating from it first before bringing it into a training session. Good luck.
