two different birds in one cage??

does anyone keep two different bird species in one cage? if so, do they still maintain their tameness or have they bonded to the other bird. I currently have a budgie and I was considering moving up to a bigger cage and buying either a lovebird or a cockatiel. what are you thoughts peoples?

Sure you can do that. I recently got my budgie a friend and they are best friends now. I can still do training with each one individually. You will just notice they want to spend a lot of time together pretty much all day. I am fine with it. Are you?

I definitely wouldn't recommend getting a lovebird. Their beaks are quite large and powerful compared to a budgie and they can be quite aggressive toward other species.

If you really want to get a friend for your budgie, I would recommend another budgie. But you'll want to buy a separate cage to quarantine the new bird for at least a month before even thinking about introducing them to each other.

i would not keep two birds in one cage even if they were the same. i couldn't take the chance that they might fight.the cage is their personal space for eating and sleeping, my hands don't even go in there unless i'm cleaning it.

It depends if they are a flocking species. Cockatiels will call other cockatiels to them to join the flock. I have 6 together. When I let them loose in the sunroom they spend a lot of time calling back and forth to make sure somebody does not get lost.

I have let my Love Birds loose at the same time and they all get along. When time to go back the lovies go to the tiel cage as if they want to join. Lovies are the dominant. They push the tiels around if they are left together in a cage no matter how big the cage.

Interesting. to answer michaels question, I just wanted to have another bird around, maybe something slightly bigger but nothing that will bully my budgie. and i've heard that cockatiels get along well with other birds. but I don't really have the space for two seperate cages.

Still doesn't answer the question. I challenge you to really think about why you want another bird, why you think this would make things better, why this would be better or at least tolerable to the existing bird, what are you currently lacking, how will the new bird solve this, etc?

well, seeing as the bird I was considering getting is a cockatiel, my family had a cocktiel when I was younger. and we also had a budgie. so I guess I wanted to have a cockatiel around again, and also someone to keep sky company during the day. of course I want to do much much more training with sky before I go ahead and introduce a bird, but I made this post to just toss ideas around.

Even though cockatiels are pretty laid back, I wouldn't put one in with a budgie as they are a fair bit stronger. Putting them in a cage together is a completely seperate thing to putting them in an aviary together. Chances are they will get on great if your careful introducing them but you do have to bear in mind that with a cage there is no privacy from one another, less space for additional toys, food, water, perches and much much less room for them to get away from one another if their is a dispute other something. To me it's not worth the risk keeping them together. Letting them out together should be fine but I wouldn't combine 2 species in a cage like that.
