Starting them in two cages and giving them letting out time together will tell you if they want to be friends. Not until one follows the other back to a cage and they play with the door still open would I consider turning my back on them. This should happen quite a few times before you close a door.
Another method you could use is having seperate cages. Give them out time together. If they get along you could change cage set up. Turn their cages so the open doors are together. They will still have their own cages but be able to visit back and forth.
