Cage aggression

Postby Lesa1211 » Fri May 04, 2012 7:46 am

Im going to look at a Indian Ringneck today. The woman is downsizing her flock and wants to rehome him. This is the info she gave me....he's only a little over a year old, talks very well, but is cage aggressive. She has to get him out of his cage with a perch, once he's out of the cage he's fine.

Ive never dealt with a cage aggressive bird before. Is it possible to work with him so he wont be cage aggressive? Anyone here have an Indian Ringneck tat can give me some pointers? Any help here would be great. Im supposed to go see him at noon today.

Im really torn here. I want to add another bird. I had my heart set on an eclectus but I told myself if another bird was in need I would help. What to do?

He is protecting what is his. He is insecure and that cage is all he can claim. Open the door and leave a trail of goodies. Eventually he will overcome with love and care.

Hello i have a female indian ringneck who i going to be 6 years old this year.

Hi i agree
i agree with liz, my ringneck is ruled by her stomache, she,ll eat anything but is very responsive to possitive reinforcement to get her in and out of the cage at the moment shes on high potency fine beause shes molting and in quite a cold envioment.

she let her self out of the cage today, i had forgotten to put the latch down i was resting after i fell over in the bathroom she woke me up afer leting herself out and by room has all doors and windows shut so she was not in danger.

i let her play and put her back in her cage so i could rest some more. They like sprouted mung beans alot and spouted chick peas. i gave her some organic wholemeal couscous and she went abit berserk yesterday, it was a treat along withh her broccoli, and part of a grape.

good luck with your desision

Maybe I am reading the original post incorrectly by why would you force a bird out from his/her cage? I open the cage and Oscar :senegal: will leave or stay at his own free will. I treat his cage like his castle and never reach in to get him out. This is his "safe" area to which i only change his water and clean etc when he is outside the cage. He is rewarded when I put him back in by giving him food in his bowl (thus going back into cage is a rewarding experience). If he chooses to stay in to play, sleep etc I do not intervene.

Not sure if I helped here as I probably misinterpretted the original post.
