Having trouble taming a Senegal

Postby Boy about town » Mon May 14, 2012 6:57 am

Hi,
I got my first parrot Cosmo over a month ago. He was hand Reared though obviously not very well as he was ok with humans but very wary of hands.

I had no trouble teaching him to step up which he still does no bother but for anything else he is very difficult. I have been very patient with him and got him to trust me. I have recently tried very tentatively to touch his beak and then reward him but he will simply take a kamikaze dive off my hand for my shoulder and if I try to touch him there he runs to the other side. Rewarding him is not easy either as if he knows it's part of training he simply takes the treat and throws it to the floor even though I know he likes them and I have removed them from his normal food and reduced his intake of that. I'm sure he isn't that scared as he doesn't display fear he simply seems to be headstrong and uncooperative.

I will slow down for now and see if he comes round later on but any advice would be very much appreciated as I would love him to be a parrot that can be handled.

How long do you take the food out before training? Would he be more interested in a toy to play with as a reward instead?
Very odd that a HR sennie is being so difficult but maybe he is just talking a long time to settle in because of the way it was done. One of mine was supposidly hand reared and I think she was but that was the only time she was taken out her box, fed and shoved back in :( maybe similar happened to yours?
I think the first issue to get round is finding a reward that he loves and doesn't have at any other time and loads of patience. Try training him a couple of other things like target to build the trust up first before you move on to further taming him. Do you use a clicker and is he conditioned to it?
