Ecelctus Baby Seems to hate me

Postby djkeithbrooks » Mon May 14, 2012 7:23 pm

I have a new Eclectus Male approx. 6 months old. I bring him out of his cage a couple times a day, he eats well, does target training well, will step up (when he feels like it) and is fairly decent as far as personality. But he is very reluctant to be to close to me. Lunges for treats, so thats no problem, wont step up when I am trying to get him off his shower perch, out of the cage, etc. Doesnt seem very interested in training, doesnt seem particularly interested in being around me. He bites when I try to offer him my hand to step up onto. My main issues is this...I know once I get him to trust me I will be able to follow instructions I've learned for training etc...But I just really want him to trust me. How long does this take? I've had him 2 weeks.

he doesn't hate you. he's just a baby that needs a little more time to adjust 2 weeks is not alot of time.just be patient and save the training for after you build your bond.i can tell you what i do with mine. i wait for them to come to me, i don't reach in to take them out i open the door and let them come out on their own.i do pick penny :gcc: up to put him to bed because he likes a snuggle and kiss before bed but mya :corella: goes in on her own so it is a little different for each bird.mya is training for a flight harness and she has total control of how long it lasts and when it happens. since she knows it's up to her she'll come to me when she knows it's time and sit in my lap looking at the harness and the treats she knows comes with it, when she's done she flies off to play.

Mine took 3 weeks to stop biting and lunging and to trust me. Others will take longer.

He's just a baby, give him time and don't force yourself on him. Take your time, let him come to you.

Trust takes time.

Target training can definitely be done before the bird apresiates your hands. Howeverhe might be scared of the stick at first, also it is a lot easier if the bird is confident enough to accept treats from you as rewards for touching the target stick. Also 2weeks is nothing. Some birds are quicker some are slower, the time to take is individual and it has todo with the owners experience, patience, personality as well as the birds individual motivation for it.

Sometimes you can target train the bird still in the cage with the door open. I have positioned a birds cage next to where i might sit and watch tv, or on the computer. start by just sitting next to the bird, periodically putting a favorite treat through the bars and into a bowl. as he starts to come over and take the treats from the bowl you can start using the training stick and getting him closer and rewarding him with treat in hand. but if he still wont take it drop it in the bowl. You cant force or rush the shyer species, it will take forever if you try. slowly and at the birds pace start targeting him closer to the open door of the cage, and then onto a hand held perch or your hand. this form of training is great because the bird still feels safe and secure in his cage yet you can spend time and interact with him while doing something else. the more time you spend just around your bird the quicker the taming will go as long as you dont push your bird...trust me when it happens its quick and totally worth the patience. good luck!
