my little :greycockatiel: luffy always like to go to his cage and dosent like to get out of it but once hes out things go just fine hes soo cuddly and smart he know target and I have just started recall training with him so far he learned to fly tomy hands in 1day and half which really amazing cus he was cliped I'm not sure about his age but i think hes over 1year old the problem is he wouldn't step upfrom his cage unless I tried to take him from above the cage by opening it from above or by reaching my hand to him while hes in cage but still takes some time to get him out and he sometimes fly over to his cage I tried to make him spend more time outside the cage and give him 2 meals a day beside his treats when hes outside so what do u I think I should do about it how to teach him to come out of his cage on his own.

thnaks in advance any advice appreciated

Try attatching a perch next to the door and enticing him with a few treats and/or targetting. Once he starts coming onto it willingly you can start practicing step ups from the perch. Ollies quite happy to just swing round the cage bars to come out if I don't offer my hand just outside the door for him to step up but Harlie isn't and I don't like just sticking my hands in the cage for them to come out. The perch is very effective with her, it makes it more comfortable for her to come out as she doesn't have the best co-ordination.

hi bosad,
my tiel does that too the first 2 months i bought him.when i offer my hand to make him out from his cage,he will step up but JUMP again inside his cage.dont give up.always offer your hand, let him fly over to his cage.this need progress.when he step up on ur hand, slowly move your hand closer and closer to the door of the cage.eventually,he will understand step up to ur hand is better than climbing himself to out of his cage.

i dont know if other member agree with this or not,but i think dont let him out and in by himself.before i let my CAG to come out and in to cage by himself and this make him always refuse to step up to my hand in future(cuz he prefer to come inside/out without step up).he become little out of control.u will get the problem like me,read this topic if u like.michael help me to correct my mistake. Now i do like what micheal said and my CAG does step up to me to come out and in by command.so as much as u can he SHOULD step up to ur hand for out and inside cage.

good luck bosad,
try to train him step up inside his cage first and slowly he will stay more on your hand.when u feel he confident enough slowly bring him closer and closer to the door.when he out,u can give treat but never give him a complete meal, this should be inside his cage.

i did this to my cockatiel and they are very smart.they will fastly get the idea.my tiel has a discipline schedule like out from morning.i will close his cage door so he will ask me to step up him back to cage.after meal he will out again until lunch.let the cage open with drink always alvaible but i take his food bowl out.when meal time come i will put his food bowl and he step up to come back in again.it takes me complete a month to make him master this but its worth.he see a step up as a 'need' for him and never refuse it.i never have a hard time to make him step up to my hand for come back and in anymore.
