What treats do your lovebirds LOVE!?

Postby teacuppig » Mon Jun 04, 2012 2:42 pm

I have a baby lovebird (about 2 months old) and I am currently semi-successfully hand taming him. I sort of rescued him from a pet store because I saw that the owner was being rough with him and the bird was terrified. I realize it would have been FAR easier to get a nice hand-tamed baby from a breeder but I couldn't leave the baby there being treated like that. So, now I have a bit of a project on my hand.

After about a week (spending a LOT of time with him), I have taught him to step-up. He likes cuddling (when I get him calm) and happily sits on my shoulder, but he is still scared of fingers/hands. I calm him down and get him to 'tolerate' my hands for a while, but then he remembers that they are the enemy and he gets scared again. I want him to like being pet, so I'm now considering giving him treats as a reward for letting my hands near him. Ultimately, I would like him to seek out human company, to want to be held, and to enjoy being pet.

Do any of you have specific treats that your lovebird adored as a baby - enough to maybe make him forget his terror for a moment? He likes spray millet, but he will only take it when he is super calm already. I want to find something he LOVES! He has so far rejected banana and broccoli. Suggestions?

Also, has anyone else hand-tamed a skittish love bird? How long did it take before he actually became fully tame? Is there a chance he won't progress past just tolerating me, even if I keep at it? I really don't know what he went through before I got him, but judging by the petstore owner, he has every right to be afraid of hands. I just hope he isn't so traumatized that I can't help him be happy with me. He trembles all the time, even when he seems to be comfortable, and it's warm in the room. He's just so afraid still. :(

I don't actually have a bird, but I've heard of the technique (from Michael!) of shoving a load of treats in a big tub, then cuing a behaviour (Step up would work well, or just touching your bird) then offering it to the bird. Birds would eat their favourite treats first, so your Lovie will pick his favourite. However, you may want to introduce him to all the treats used first- He may love sweetcorn, for example, but if you've never fed it to him before he won't know and won't pick it from the tub, and you'll be forever feeding him his non-favourite treat. Alternatively you may just want to put two different types of seeds on you hand and offer it to him, see which he likes best. Just make sure he doesn't pull a Kili and grab both!

I hope this helps, and I'd love it if you could tell us which treat he likes the best for my possible future Lovie! :swaying:

Thank you for your response!

I haven't tried corn yet - I wonder if unsalted unsweetened corn out of the can would be okay...

I have actually been having better success with the spray millet. He is getting more and more accustomed to my hands, and I keep feeding him nibbles of the millet when he allows me to pet him. What a mess, though! :amazon:

Millet is always a huge thing but small sunflower seeds seem to always do the trick.
Good luck with your bird :)
