new senegal parrot owner

Postby shikikanzero » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:44 pm

so this morning i was sitting outside, taking in some fresh air, when i went to go back in my house this parrot literally flew into my house! picked it up and put it on my shoulder and it was being very friendly. the right side of its face has some kind of cut/it keeps self mutilating itself. it seems its wings were clipped before, so i assume it has been owned. the wings are almost fully grown back though. took him to the vet, had the injury checked out and the nails and wings clipped (the nails was so it would stop hurting itself scratching, the wings im not too sure if i should have done that, probably wont again after they grow back out) bought a cage and some food. outside the cage its friendly, it gave me a couple warning bites trying to take him off my shoulder, but once its in the cage it becomes really defensive, i have a hard time taking him out. (which i will have to do later, to give him eyedrops) while hes in the cage he just stands in one area without even moving, is that normal?
thanks for answering any questions! im actually a first time bird owner (although my father used to breed local hawaiian birds)

Well I think making an effort to reunite the bird with its owner would be a good idea to start off with, if you've made every effort to do so but cannot find the birds family then you can say you own him.
Sorry to sound harsh but somebody is probably devestated s/he got out. A good place to start is by contacting John Haywood who's details can be found on parrots magazine website. He operates a lost and found register for all countries and can advise you on what other measures you can take to help.

i have searched the local craigslists for any lost ads, also posted one up in case anyone is still looking. the vet did mention that this bird has been living in the wild for a while. i did recall seeing a ad for a lost bird on telephone poles (last year though) but i dont recall if it was even a parrot. of course if someone comes up to claim him of course ill part with him.

the medicine is helping, the other eye opened up today. sometimes he bites when i try to approach him to pick him up, sometimes he doesnt. most of it time its when hes in or around his cage. is there a proper way to approach the bird to pick it up? or does it just not want to be picked up and bite? ive been leaving the cage open while im at home to let it roam around if it wants.

Michael has some excellent articles on his blog about taming, training, handling, biting training step ups etc. You can click on the link at the top of the page to take you there, there is a site map which gives an index of all his articles so you can get straight to the ones you need.
Learning your parrots body language is a good way to avoid getting bitten but that takes time.
I'm glad the little fellow is coming right again. Keep us updated and someone here will be able to help you if you have any questions.

You might try using a small hand towel - to remove him from the cage - So that he doesn't get the negative mental image s/he seems to be getting now.
