How effective is volume control training?

Postby Arshia » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:10 pm

"Volume Control Training" lol. I don't know the exact word - but I've heard of many training methods that teach a parrot to not be so loud - such as the 10 second facing away 'punishment' or getting a bell for the parrot to ring when it wants to come out rather than screaming.

I just wanted to hear anecdotal evidence - how effective is this? I know it won't get rid of the screeching completely, but would it be enough to make something like a conure (and not GCCs either) suitable for an apartment?

Thanks :D

oh i signed up just to talk to you ..i just read a years worth of info to stop my smart blue and gold from the loudest random death scream ever all throughout the day.. assuming your bird is heathy good diet time spent clean and all the basics needs are met then yes you can stop the loud..i found one little article that said something different from everything i read.. i realy try everything even crying it and the ird was happy playing even with me.. you know the turn your back, walk out , positive reinforcment ..nothing helped ... this article (i lost the article) said go to him when he screams and when he dont and whisper to him sweetly!! i thought my older birds are wonderfull and they know how to whisper. as well as i added other things that we already do..turn all the volume of everything down and dont flail move slower near him lower tv, radio dogs people kids all of it mello out for the bird... . s... it not only worked he started roosting and quiet chatter bed time is good to start when they are roosting anyway and they tend to chatter quite (mine never knew how to do this until that very day i walked in and stayed (dont let him run you out of room or house go to him as much as you can) bring a toy or sqeek a toy very quiet he stoped to listen ... in three days he is saying words and small sentences ...its true if they are loud and noisy they want to make sounds!! god i hope you luck i can still hear his yelling in my head sometimes when he isnt!! hes got a cute voice now to my shock
good luck

I appreciate your thoughtfulness in signing up just to share with me that article that benefitted you greatly. But your interpretation is riddled with grammatical and spelling errors - I didn't really understand what you were saying :(
Maybe I'll have luck searching for that article using keywords I found in your description to narrow down google results?

Don't be rude.

Whisper to him when he is yelling and he will get quiet to find out what you are saying.

I don't think Arshia was being rude. I had a hard time understanding too.

And Liz, your method of whispering reminds me of when I was in first grade! If we were getting rowdy, the teacher would start whispering to herself. We would get so curious that we would stop and strain to hear!

Shelby - you listed NH USA. I did the NC USA but some members don't put that in.

We have members all around the world. English is not their first language so I think they do good to get their thoughts across. It would help others understand if they put their location in.

Heck - English is my only language and I have trouble with gramer and spelling.

I didn't mean to sound rude, sorry if it seemed so.
And heck - as long as it's understandable, I have no objection to it lol. I'm not a fastidious English grammar martinet or whatever.

But back to the volume thing; will the whispering have any long term effects, or will it just quiet the bird down when it screams?

It seems like it would only be a short term solution.
