Biting...?

Postby Cockatielsongs » Mon Jul 09, 2012 2:11 am

I'm really confused, my cockatiel SOMETIMES bites when I tell him to step up/ high five (not hard) and I'm not exactly sure why... I removed anything from the room that could of been the reason, I know he is not afraid of me because he would always hurry over to me if he isn't already with me. I figured that it wasn't because he was testing out my finger because I would look angry, is it because his wings are clipped? I find it really strange that he would bite my finger because he is quite tame and loves being with me and getting a head scratch.
Note: He doesn't bite all the time I ask him to step up/high five only SOMETIMES. :greycockatiel:

Birds are like people and pretty much any other animal too, sometimes they just really don't want to do something and cuz your birdie is clipped he cannot just move out your way so he needs another way to tell you he doesn't want to do it, hence the bite. If the bite worked and he didn't have to step up then the next time he will do it again if he doesn't really want to.

Learning to read his body language will be helpful to you, look at it closely before asking him to do anything, you will soon learn which behaviours mean he doesn't really want to and will be able to avoid that bite in the first place by not asking at that moment but asking when he seems more relaxed.

It's also a good idea to variably reward successful attempts as it will make him want to do it more often on the chance there is a treat to come.

Thanks, I see now, when he doesn't want to step up he doesn't really bite he just holds my finger in his beak and push my finger away and I found out that he only bites if he's on his favourite perch etc and doesn't want to leave.
