Master Targeting Before Hand Taming?

Postby meowzero » Mon Jul 09, 2012 2:06 pm

I have a Galah and she already knows how to step up well. She seems to trust us somewhat. We can pet her and she loves getting her head scratched. But she hates it when we handle her. I tried slowly extending her wings out, progressing more each day. But she always bites and/or forcibly removes her wings out from our grip. I try to give her treat when I extend her wings out. But she bites too much. And I'm not sure if I should treat her for biting or forcing her wings away from us.

She has not been target trained. Should I target train her before attempting any of the hand taming exercises? She is also quite young, about 4 months old.

I'd say targeting should come first. It teaches the bird how to learn and how to work for treats. Applying the technique directly to something else first may be more confusing. Since it is only 4 months old though, I wouldn't be terribly worried about formal training or excessive handling yet. Focus more on introducing all kinds of food, objects, toys, and people. Start formal training when the bird becomes a bit more food focused.
