Rodney dilikes the clicker

Postby nuttyone1 » Sun Jul 15, 2012 1:01 pm

Well today was the first time I have introduced the clicker to Rodney :amazon: Its hasn't gone too well. I follwed the instructions to not feed him before we practise and it was very calm (i kicked the household out for a few hours). It started ok, he would come off his perch to collect the treat. We done this for a few minutes and then he went flew back into his cage. I stopped at this point as I didn't want to push him too fast. This afternoon he seems a little sulky and has not wanted any interaction with me (or anyone else). I tried the treat clicker again this evening and nope not a dicky bird (pun intended), and he even gave me warning nips.
Can anyone further advise on this, have i pushed him too quick only having him for 3 weeks or should I gently perservere in a day/week/month's time? Or do they just get sulky days where they want to be left alone. any advice would be great thanks from me and rodney :amazon:

sometimes they get sulky.i personally have never used a clicker, nothing against them just don't really see the point, when they do what i want i give them a treat and tell them good boy/girl.if the clicker seems to bother him i would give him time to calm and try training without one.you seem to be forming a quick bond so i don't think you're moving too fast.

As Pennyand rocky said, sometimes parrots are just like that, we all have good and bad days.

You can try muffling the clicker with a towell of something so it isn't as loud but if he really doesn't like it then just use good boy/bird as your bridge between the cue and the reward.

Well he loves me again...I havent used the clicker today but he was happy to come out of his cage, have a treat, and I am getting him further away from his cage each time. He is now content to walk over the arm of my chair and walk along the back he came over to me nuzzled my hair and wanted a scratching. we done this for about 15 mins and he was more than content...yay time is what it is going to take i guess... :amazon:
