Too much, too soon?

Postby Whimsical » Mon Jul 30, 2012 9:41 am

So on Saturday I brought home a 4 month old Quaker Parrot :monk: The first day went well and he seemed to settle in to his new surroundings nicely. Day 2 he was already out of the cage, socializing with us, stepping up, snuggling, the works. He seems extremely comfortable and friendly, and seems to be taking the transition to his new home wonderfully.

However, there is something I'm concerned about. He has taken to chewing the bars of his cage. He goes to the bottom of the cage, under his water dish in the corner and chews at the bars incessantly. Has he become attached to me too soon? Have I coddled him too much? I am making sure to give him ample cage time as to not get him used to being out 24/7... But I'm wondering if I made a mistake somewhere along the way. I don't feel like him chewing the bars is a good thing, I don't want him hurting himself or something.

I'm not reinforcing the behaviour by letting him out when he chews, and I'm trying not to give him any attention while he's doing it... But is there more I can do? How can I discourage this behaviour?

It sounds like he wants to chew. I don't know why they do it but I have heard some distructive stories. I gave mine a small Rose of Sharon stump. They took to it fast. I just have to keep the floor swept.

He's got plenty of things to chew in his cage... perhaps just not things he's interested in? :?

OMG your picture is too cute :D My sun conure did the same thing when I first got her[she was 2 and a half months old] It was like she was trying everthing to break out of her cage. She was just adjusting [I think your bird is too] My advice would be to put her on a realistic time out of the cage schedule. So she knows what to expect :D

Thanks :D

I'll definitely have to give that a shot. I'm finding I have to force myself to put him back in the cage... He's just too adorable and snuggly!
